CHURCHES OF VENICE : The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

VISITING VENICE CHURCHES OFF VENICE : The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, usually just called the Frari, is a church in Venice, northern Italy. One of the greatest churches in the city, it has the status of a minor basilica. It stands on the Campo dei Frari at the heart of the San Polo district. The church is dedicated to theAssumption (Italian: Assunzione della Beata Virgine).
The Franciscans were granted land to build a church in 1250, but the building was not completed until 1338. Work almost immediately began on its much larger replacement, the current church, which took over a century to build. The campanile, the second tallest in the city after that of San Marco, was completed in 1396.
The imposing edifice is built of brick, and is one of the city's three notable churches built in the Italian Gothic style. As with many Venetian churches, the exterior is rather plain. The interior contains the only rood screen still in place in Venice.

The Frari is a parish church of the Vicariate of San Polo-Santa Croce-Dorsoduro. The other churches of the parish are San Barnaba, San Ludovico Vescovo, Santa Maria del Soccorso and Santa Margherita.
Tiziano Vecelli or Tiziano Vecellio (c. 1488/1490[1] – 27 August 1576[2] better known as Titian ( /ˈtɪʃən/) - the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school of painting - is interred in the Frari.

“One of the most beautiful places in Italy!”

This church is indescribably beautiful with extraordinary art. Some of the great sculptures of Italian art are found here even if they are religious and where else can one see Donatello and Titian for free?

“Worth it for Titian's Masterpiece Alone....”

...but there are other fabulous works of art in addition to the Assumption of the Virgin hanging in situ above the alter. It's on a nice big campo, an interesting walk from the Rialto Bridge. Just behind the church is the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. The two make a great reason to visit an area a bit off the beaten path.

The Grand Canal

The Grand Canal (Italian: Canal Grande, Venetian: Canałasso) is a canal in VeniceItaly. It forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water buses (Italianvaporetti) and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola.
At one end the canal leads into the lagoon near Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin: in between it makes a large S-shape through the central districts (sestieri) of Venice. It is 3,800 m long, 30–90 m wide, with an average depth of five meters (16.5 ft).

Historical Regatta

On the first Sunday of September takes place the Historical Regatta ("Regata Storica"), a competition between Venetian boats watched by thousands of people from the banks or from floating stands. Competitions are preceded by a historical procession ("Corteo Storico") remembering the entrance of the Queen of Cyprus Catherine Cornaroafter abdication in 1489: gondoliers in costumes sail in typical 16th century boats following the Bucentaur, doge's state galley.

[edit]The Feast-day of the Madonna della Salute

On November 21, Venetians thank the Virgin Mary for saving from the plague epidemic in 1630-38 with a pilgrimage to Santa Maria della Salute. Pilgrims cross Grand Canal on a temporary pontoon bridge from Campo Santa Maria Zobenigo, and enjoy stalls and traditional dishes.

“Incredible”

The grand canal is Venice. I almost cried going down it. So many views you recognise from art. Simply beautiful at any time. Go on number 1or 2 water bus, go early morning and at night, to see the canal at best and quietest. It is amazing to see in the morning with all the deliveries being made by boat before the hubbub of tourists. A unique and spectular place to enjoy.

“Busy and beautiful”

So wonderful to sit with a coffee and watch the world pass by on the water. We took a gondola from outside the Hotel Danieli, agreed the price beforehand, advised by our hotel what was reasonable. Having watched other tourists during the heat of the day - we selected early evening (prior to 7pm, as it gets more expensive then). A wonderful experience, although not cheap.
